ISRAEL MUST STOP KILLING JOURNALISTS

We, the undersigned journalists and media workers, unequivocally condemn Israel’s killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza.

Despite repeated condemnation by internationally-recognized human rights and media organizations, Israel has continued to kill and maim Palestinian journalists in Gaza. It has also escalated attacks against journalists in Lebanon.

The targeting of journalists is an attack on press freedom and a violation of international law

This must stop.

Palestinian journalists in Gaza have served as the world’s eyes and ears, documenting Israeli attacks such as the deliberate killing of civilians carrying white flags and torture of Palestinians in detention. These journalists have received death threats, been maimed, or killed by Israeli forceseven while not on assignment. Their families have also been killed by Israeli forces.

Journalists have continued reporting despite surveillance by Israel, grieving the loss of their families, friends and homes, and surviving Israel’s severe restrictions on food that have led to famine across the Gaza Strip, according to the United Nations.

The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that Israeli attacks have killed at least 123 Palestinian journalists and media workers in Gaza, making it the deadliest period for journalists since the organization started collecting data in 1992.  In a report released on Oct. 4, CPJ said “Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza has exacted an unprecedented and horrific toll on Palestinian journalists.” The Government Media Office in Gaza puts the death toll of Palestinian journalists even higher: 182 over the last year.

As the Israeli military escalated its attacks on central and northern Gaza in October 2024, they killed two Palestinian journalists and seriously injured three others. On Oct. 7, Al Jazeera cameraman Ali Al-Attar was severely injured due to shrapnel from an airstrike while he was covering the conditions of displaced Palestinians. Al-Attar is now in critical condition, with medical scans showing severe bleeding and shrapnel lodged in his brain. Two days later, Israeli forces shot Al Jazeera cameraman Fadi Al-Wahidi in the neck while he was reporting. Doctors say his injury has left him paralyzed for life and he is now in a coma.

According to Al Jazeera, the Israeli military has refused medical evacuation requests for both of the injured journalists.

On Oct. 9, Israeli warplanes also struck and killed Al-Aqsa photojournalist Mohammad Al-Tanani and injured Al-Aqsa reporter Tamer Lubbad. Lubbad told CPJ that “repeated and deliberate gunfire” from Israeli forces prevented ambulance crews from reaching Al-Tanani’s body for two hours. All of these journalists were clearly identifiable as members of the press.

On Oct. 23, the Israeli military accused six Al Jazeera journalists in north Gaza of belonging to militant groups. As CPJ has pointed out, “Israel has repeatedly made similar unproven claims without producing credible evidence.” This is alarming and dangerous. These journalists must not be attacked or harmed and must be allowed to do their jobs.

The situation for Palestinian journalists in Gaza is dire, and as their colleagues we call for:

  • Immediate medical evacuations for Ali Al-Attar, Fadi Al-Wahidi and all injured journalists.

  • The protection of the journalists who remain.

  • Fair reporting on Gaza and the condition of Palestinian journalists there.

We affirm that no one is more qualified to report and deliver the news from Gaza than local journalists, and it is the professional and personal duty of all journalists and media institutions to ensure their protection. The Israeli government does not allow international media access into Gaza, except through carefully curated and controlled military embeds.  Most of what we know and can report on from the U.S. about the reality on the ground in Gaza is made possible only through the tireless and dangerous work of local Palestinian journalists.

In addition, the targeting of media teams, the arrests of journalists on assignment, the destruction of media infrastructure as well as the suppression of journalists in the West Bank and the killing of journalists in south Lebanon must stop.

We call on newsrooms to advocate for the protection and safety of our Palestinian colleagues with the same fervor and tenacity as they have done for our colleagues reporting from Russia, Ukraine, and elsewhere in the world.

Updated November 1, 2024

I think journalism is the height of public service, and I greatly admire my colleagues in Gaza and Lebanon who are our eyes and ears into Israel’s war crimes. I consider it my duty to support my inspirations to ensure their safety.
— N, Investigative reporter
I’m tired of feeling constrained in expressing my condemnation of Israel’s targeting & killing of Palestinian journalists. This action may result in me getting a talking-to by my superiors, but I am hopeful this statement can help us as an industry change how we talk about the current war on Gaza and perhaps, Palestinian issues more broadly.
— M, Reporter
Palestinian journalists have been filling the gap with grisly and unflinching coverage from the ground of the ongoing genocide in Palestine that has been streaming on our smartphones in a 24-hour live feed for over a year. Yet much of the global mainstream media is still largely silent regarding the overwhelming casualties of our colleagues in Gaza.

The journalists who have attempted to bring more fairness to their coverage or amplify the voices and perspectives of Palestinians, frequently find themselves the subject of online hate campaigns calling for them to be fired. At the very minimum, there has to be a recognition within newsrooms that there has been a glaring problem for decades that we as journalists haven’t been able to name, which is anti-Palestinian racism.
— S, Journalist
There are zero exceptions to these principles. Normalizing this violence against journalists has downstream consequences in the rules of engagement in war. Fewer journalists on the ground enable the state to remain an authority with unchecked power. Journalists around the world should recognize and reject this dangerous precedent Israel continues to set.
